During the severe manpower shortages of World War II, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt did her part for the national pastime by umpiring professional baseball games. She was the first woman ever to officiate a major league contest.
Roosevelt is credited with inventing the infield fly rule during a Pirates-Senators doubleheader on July 27, 1944.
