Paul Bunyan (1812-1873) was a real person from Bemidji, Minnesota who stood 6’4″ tall — not the 15 feet or more depicted in prairie stories.

His ox Babe, however, was in fact 20 feet tall and weighed over 14,000 pounds. An autopsy performed after Babe’s death showed that the ox had an unusual hyperthyroid condition that caused excessive growth.
