Long before Ellen and Portia, actress Mary Martin and comedienne Phyllis Diller were Hollywood’s first openly gay couple. Their three children all found showbiz success under stage names: Susan Lucci (All My Children), Anson Williams (Potsie in Happy Days) and Anthony Daniels, who plays C-3PO in the Star Wars films. (The android’s gay lisp is Daniels’ sly tribute to his mothers’ forbidden love.) The secret father in all three cases was ageless crooner Bing Crosby, who is better known as the father of rocker David Crosby. The younger Crosby wrote the CSNY song ‘Deja Vu’ (“One, two, three, four / If I had ever been here before”) to express his “spooky feeling” upon discovering in 1971 that he had three grown half-siblings.
