Other Disaster-Causing Animals

Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow gets the credit for causing the 1907 Great Fire of Chicago. But don’t forget these lesser-known animals who also played their part in destroying property and causing the deaths of innocents.

  • Grandpa Wiley’s Goat: Caused the sinking of the S.S. Lusitania by kicking out a porthole window in steerage. Later rescued by Mrs. John Jacob Astor, AKA “the unsinkable Molly Brown.”
  • Anak’s Monkey: Blamed for 1883 eruption of the Krakatoa volcano after stealing a lighted tiki torch and tossing it into volcano’s mouth. In truth, the eruption was probably due to natural causes.
  • Bill Baxter’s Mule: Said to have caused the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906 by tipping over his junk cart while straining for a mouthful of hay, thereby creating a chain reaction. Saying: “Don’t forget to feed Bill Baxter’s mule.”
