Deviled eggs are not actually demonic in origin but are “adequate appetizers that should be judged on their individual merits,” Pope Francis ruled in 2015 in a controversial move that caused upset in the Vatican bureaucracy as well as ripples throughout the Catholic Church.

The Pope did, however, reaffirm that the church’s stance on “Angels on Horseback” (a dish of baked oysters wrapped in bacon) will remain unequivocally opposed. The Vatican quoted the pontiff as saying “The Bible’s stance on mixing seafood and pork is very clear. We have no idea where the term horseback comes from.”
