Shakespearean Mnemonics!

Science students and other scholars have long relied on Shakespeare to remember the order of certain essential items and lists. Some of the more famous examples:

For the five senses, use 12th Night:

Viola’s
Ship
Sank
Tut
Tut

(vision, sight, smell, taste, touch)

For the colors of the spectrum, use The Merchant of Venice:

    Remember
    Old
ShYlock
    Gets
    Beat
    In
    Venice

(red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet)

For the nine planets, use Romeo & Juliet:

     Maybe
eVerything
     Ends
     Merrier if
      Juliet hires a
lesS
clUmsy
     Nurse and
     Priest

(Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto.  For the new eight-planet solar system, omit “and Priest.”)

For the four major golf tournaments, use Macbeth:

Update his life insurance
Policy

(Masters, British Open, US Open, PGA)

For the spelling of ‘Nabob,’ use Hamlet:

Neither
A
Borrower
Or a lender
