The cat marriage craze of 1952!
Tiny little chapels, matching scratching posts, and heart-shaped Pocono cat beds were all part of the Cat Marriage fad of 1952. Over one million kitty couples were joined in “holy catrimony” that year, many of them married in “Catolic” churches. Tonight Show host Steve Allen even held a ceremony to marry two Maltese on the late-night show, with Father Horace Greeley officiating. The craze reached its peak with the $80,000 wedding of Kip and Fluffy in Asheville, North Carolina, with a sit-down dinner for 500 and a live performance by a young Elvis Presley (billed as “Elvis Purrsley” for the occasion). The craze faded after the state of Nevada announced that it had no legal standing to offer cat divorces.
