Part of East Moline, Illinois sits on a former landfill composed of several hundred thousand unsold copies of the St. Louis Post newspaper.
These papers were hauled upriver by barge in the mid-1800s, after the Post suffered several consecutive years of poor sales. Some of East Moline’s neighborhood names, such as Obitsville, are a nod to this history.
