The body of the Duke of Wellington was exhumed in 1922 on order of Prime Minister Clement Atlee to see if he really was buried with his boots on. Doctors determined that he was, in actual fact, wearing Persian slippers. However, the corpse as a whole was in excellent condition. The Duke’s body was then reinterred with full military honors at Westminster Abbey.
