Sesame Street’s Muppets were given first names that were unpopular at the time of naming (i.e. Grover, Kermit, Elmo, Telly, Oscar) so that, presumably, no kids would share that name and be poked fun at by their peers.

This was recently demonstrated in a new study of records at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, with new birth records from the 1890s revealing at least three instances of the first name “Cookiemonster.”
