Napoleon Bonaparte invented miniature golf in 1819 while in exile on St. Helena. (The island was too small for a full-sized course.)

On his first hole, players putted through a guillotine as it was raised and lowered by an aide-de-camp. Plans for a manicured 36-hole layout in the Gardens of Versailles were found among Napoleon’s papers after his death.
