Because no Bible was available in his remote Vermont summer cabin when news of Warren Harding’s death arrived, Calvin Coolidge was sworn in as president on a copy of the Saturday Evening Post. (He repeated the ceremony three days later in the White House with an actual Bible.)
“Coolidge oath” editions of the Post have become collector’s items. The issue, dated July 3, 1923, features a Norman Rockwell cover of a flapper stretching on tiptoes to kiss Uncle Sam. One copy sold at auction for $4500 in 2013.
