When Jumbo Was a Pepper

Circus favorite Jumbo the Elephant was retired to the National Zoo in Washington, DC in 1943. There the popular pachyderm was trained to make his own peanut butter sandwiches, an act which he performed three times daily for adoring zoo visitors — always carefully removing the crusts before enjoying his own “trunk-made” snack.

In 1954, Jumbo starred in one of the earliest Dr. Pepper television commercials, enjoying his sandwiches “at 10, 2 and 4” alongside TV hostess Dinah Shore.
